On November 26th, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held on the final Thursday of November. This was the tradition until 1939, when President Franklin Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving a week earlier to the second-to-last Thursday of November. His idea was that this would stimulate the economy by giving people another week to shop between Thanksgiving and Christmas. People did not like this new 'Franksgiving'. Because it was unpopular, it only last two years, before in 1941, it was put into law that Thanksgiving would be on the 4th Thursday of November.

On November 27th (a Thursday that year), 100 years ago today, New York City held the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
